International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Patricia O'Brien and Katie Sheehan from LAWPRO's South West Catchment Science team beside the River Maigue, Croom, Co. Limerick.

Annually, the 11th February marks International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The day celebrates the significant role women have played in science throughout history and aims to encourage equality in science, technology, and innovation.

To celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2026, Patricia O’Brien and Katie Sheehan from our South West Catchment Science team share insights into life as a catchment scientist with LAWPRO. They talk about what inspired them to pursue careers in catchment science, what their day-to-day work involves, and what they enjoy most about making a difference for our water bodies.

What is Catchment Science?

Our Catchment Science team is responsible for gathering and sharing information about water quality through the characterisation of waterbodies in Priority Areas for Action. This establishes the scientific evidence that enables implementing bodies to target activities which restore and protect our natural waters.

Our work often involves the identification of highly complex issues across a range of areas, which can affect water quality. Referrals on the issues found are then made to the relevant bodies, depending on the issue identified.
