The Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO), has today published its Statement of Strategy 2025-2028. The Strategy was prepared following consultation with staff, senior management and external stakeholders. These consultations helped to reinforce the purpose of the organisation and its role within the context of local government. It also helped align the core organisational objectives with the Water Action Plan- A River Basin Management Plan for Ireland.
Speaking about today’s publication, Anthony Coleman Director of Services for LAWPRO said: “While there is significant work and collaboration taking place as part of implementation of the Water Action Plan, our rivers and transitional waters are suffering from continued and persistent declines in water quality. Targeted action will continue to be key to addressing water quality issues. Through collaboration and targeted action, improvements in water quality can be achieved.
Our shared ambition of achieving and maintaining good water quality in Ireland will require leadership and collaboration across all bodies along with the support of stakeholders and staff. I look forward to working with my colleagues as we deliver on our goals and work towards our shared vision over the coming years.
Since its inception in 2016 LAWPRO has evolved significantly and as we move into the next cycle of the Water Action Plan, this strategy will help us ensure our efforts remain focused on clear outcomes. Throughout the organisational changes we continue to have water quality, community engagement and collaboration at the heart of what we do.”

LAWPRO’s principal mission is to engage and support communities, provide scientific evidence to inform the implementation of water quality measures, and to coordinate and collaborate with local authorities, public bodies and stakeholders to protect and care for the natural waters and catchments of Ireland.
